Reza Salavati

Dr. Reza Salavati has a broad background in RNA biochemistry, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, and he laid the groundwork for his research program by integrating computational and experimental approaches. Salavati’s research has an emphasis on the fundamental molecular aspects of three related trypanosomatid pathogen model organisms -- -- rypanosoma brucei group, T. cruzi, and Leishmania species, which are known collectively as Tritryps. The current researches being conducted in the Salavati lab are centered on the systems analysis of trypanosomatid genome as well as dynamics and developmental regulation of the editosome function in trypanosomatids. Following which, his lab group developed methods to generate a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of gene regulation and protein-protein interaction network of trypanosomatid pathogens, aiding the identification of key pathways or regulators in the RNA editing complex and post-transcriptional gene regulation. Salavati established a high throughput screen, identified potential inhibitors for RNA editing that kill T. brucei in vitro, and proposed the mechanism of inhibition, indicating the exciting potential of the similar targets for future drug development.
