Fang Liu

Fang Liu is a Senior Scientist and Head of Molecular Neuroscience in the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute at CAMH. She is also Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Physiology and Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. Fang is interested in the molecular basis of the cross-talk among the vast array of neuronal signaling receptors and channels, and she wants to disclose the mechanisms underlying the link between disruptions of the interactions and neurological diseases like drug addiction, major depression, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease etc. In 2000, Fang’s team provided the first molecular evidence that direct protein-protein interaction enables functional cross-talk between G protein-coupled receptors and ligand-gated ion channels. In a recent paper in 2019, Fang’s lab revealed that the disruption of the SynGAP-dopamine D1 receptor interaction impairs the GABAergic interneurons migration. Based on the knowledge about the interplay of receptors through signaling proteins, Fang and her group have been developing therapeutic protein peptides which can interfere with specific protein-protein signaling hence prevent adverse signaling pathways; this application of synthetic peptide has been shown effective in animal models of depression and nicotine addiction respectively.
