Beatriz Rico

Professor Beatriz Rico completed her Ph.D. study at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, and later did postdoctoral study at the University of California, San Francisco. Now as a Principal Investigator, she leads research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the development and maturation of neural networks. Prof Rico’s research comprises of both axon and synapse levels, which are subjects of corresponding parallel projects in her lab; in the recent projects, the lab is investigating the formation of GABAergic synapses, and has unravelled a new signalling pathway involved in GABAergic synapse formation: Nrg1-ErbB4, which is of great significance to current understanding to neurological disorders especially Schizophrenia, as both Nrg1 and ErbB4 are associated with Schizophrenia. Besides, in the context of axon remodelling, the Rico Lab has explored the function of the intracellular kinase Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) in different aspects of axonal development, demonstrating that FAK is involved in Sema3A-induced remodelling, including pruning.
