Who are the pioneers of synthetic biology, and what contribution did they make?

George Church, born in 1954, is a geneticist, molecular engineer and chemist, and a renowned professor of genetics at Harvard University (USA). He is considered a pioneer in synthetic biology, a discipline that aims to create synthetic organisms and DNA in the laboratory.

His contributions to this area of science date back to the 1980s, with the publication of the first direct method of genome sequencing. Church thus promoted the implementation of the Human Genome Project, which sought to identify and map the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes that make up the human genome. He has participated in the creation of some 20 biotechnology companies, and is co-author of more than 290 publications and 50 patents. He was also one of the first volunteers to make his DNA public through the Internet.
