What is synthetic biology’s role in combating COVID-19?

Beyond vaccines and antibodies, synthetic biology will play an important role in the long-term fight against COVID-19 and other potential pandemic pathogens.

A mutation in COVID-19 could render a vaccine ineffective and cause a new outbreak. To support the development of a long-lasting vaccine, researchers published a map of the virus' epitopes, the parts of the virus to which antibodies attach. By pinpointing the epitopes that rarely mutate, these data will help synthetic biology teams design vaccines and antibodies that confer long-lasting immunity.

Synthetic biology can also be applied to help provide diagnostic tests, including Toehold circuitry and in vitro detection approaches based on CRISPR, which could be used to evaluate patients with VID-19. Scientists can apply these approaches to develop diagnostic kits that are easy to distribute.
