Benoit Malleret's team specializes in the in vitro production of red blood cells with the aim of generating universal blood for transfusion purposes and studying the molecular mechanisms underlying erythrocytic parasite invasion, specifically Plasmodium spp.
The laboratory's primary objective is to scale up the production of immature red blood cells (reticulocytes). And its ultimate goal is to establish a long-term in vitro culture of any Plasmodium species, enabling parasite gene editing, drug screening, and the identification of potential malaria vaccine candidates.
