Research Area
We specialize in the in vitro production of red blood cells with the aim of generating universal blood for transfusion purposes and studying the molecular mechanisms underlying erythrocytic parasite invasion, specifically Plasmodium spp. Our laboratory's primary objective is to scale up the production of immature red blood cells (reticulocytes). By employing genome editing techniques on erythrocytes, we can identify the host receptors and parasite ligands involved in blood stage infection. Our ultimate goal is to establish a long-term in vitro culture of any Plasmodium species, enabling parasite gene editing, drug screening, and the identification of potential malaria vaccine candidates.
Team Description
In our laboratory, we have made a significant breakthrough by successfully identifying the crucial role played by reticulocytes expressing CD71 or CD98 on their surface in the invasion process of Plasmodium vivax. We are currently engaged in active investigations to explore the involvement of these receptors, as well as other potential receptors, in the invasion processes of various Plasmodium species. Furthermore, we have developed an innovative in vitro system that allows us to generate erythrocytes from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hIPSCs). This technology opens up possibilities for customized red blood cell production, offering a potential solution for patients with rare blood types who often face challenges in finding suitable matches among traditional blood donors. By leveraging hIPSC-derived erythrocytes, we can overcome the limitations posed by the scarcity of rare blood types and enhance transfusion compatibility.
