How far are we from a COVID-19 vaccine?

The first phase I clinical trial for a potential COVID-19 vaccine has begun in the United States on March 16, having four adults received their first doses. As previously reported, NIH clinical trial of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 already began from February 25, 2020 in Nebraska. As the COVID-19 is spreading rapidly all over the world, we urgently need drugs and vaccines that could be widely available.

Currently, there are no FDA-approved therapies or vaccines for SARS-CoV-2. Experts estimate it could take 12-18 months to develop a vaccine ready for market, which assumes the process from conception to market availability goes smoothly.
