Why Short-Form Videos Keep Grabbing Our Attention

I’ve had the same problem, honestly. At some point I realized those videos are designed to keep you hooked with tiny hits of surprise, which is pretty much the same mechanic described in detail at https://nichegamer.com/the-dopamine-economy-casinos-vs-social-media/ and it helped me understand what’s going on. For me the only thing that helped was setting a timer every time I open the app, because otherwise I completely lose track of time. Once I started doing that, the urge to keep scrolling slowly went down, and I feel a bit more in control.

Just passing by and reading this thread out of curiosity, and it’s interesting how different apps seem to affect people differently. I don’t use short-form videos much myself, but friends of mine always tell me how easy it is to get sucked in. Maybe it’s just the fast pace of everything online nowadays, but I guess everyone eventually finds their own rhythm with it, depending on how they like to spend their free time.

Lately I’ve been catching myself watching short-form videos way longer than I intended. It’s like I open the app for “just a minute,” and suddenly twenty minutes disappear. It kind of reminds me of how my friend once said those quick bursts of content feel like pulling a lever on a slot machine — always waiting for the next “wow” clip. Does anyone else feel this weird pull? How do you avoid falling into that endless scroll?
