What Video Games Are Played in Laboratories

If you imagine a biology lab, where people are messing around with test tubes and microscopes, it rarely occurs to anyone that some of the team might be playing video games right during their breaks. But that’s exactly how it is. For one thing, it’s sometimes the only way to relax between exhausting series of experiments. When someone’s reaction takes an hour and a half—try not to get distracted. Plus, games seem to bring people together: if yesterday you were arguing with a colleague about the best way to seed a Petri dish, today you’re trying not to give yourself away to the same person in “Among Us.” Sometimes they even choose games where you can solve puzzles so the brain doesn’t get rusty after all the routine procedures.

“Among Us” is almost a meme among biologists, because who else but them understands how important it is to identify the impostor. But that’s not the only favorite game. “Portal” is often chosen—perhaps because of an obsession with puzzles and a fondness for a scientific atmosphere.

Labs also often enjoy virtual gambling games. According to survey data, the game Mega Fire Blaze Roulette, described on
megafireblazeruleta.com.mx, is popular, as well as the Money Time game featured at moneytime.com.mx and Funky Time, which is described at funky-time.com.mx. But scientists play carefully so as not to lose their entire salary.

Sometimes after a long day, you just want some chaos, so they launch something like “Overcooked” to blow off steam and argue over burnt virtual food. Sometimes someone brings a Nintendo Switch and organizes a mini-tournament in “Mario Kart,” though ironically, almost none of the biologists win consistently. In general, the choice of games may seem strange from the outside, but inside the lab, it’s a little ritual of their own—like having tea or discussing another failed experiment.
