What is small RNA gene editing technology?

When editing DNA using CRISPR, there are many potential problems. Furthermore, edits using this method are directly inserted into the genome making them permanent. Thus if an inserted gene has unforeseen consequences or breaks up another important sequence, there is little that can be done to fix it. For this reason, scientist have found that RNA editing may be useful.

RNA editing involves inserting modifying the RNA in an organism to induce some sort of effect like ramping up protein production or repressing another it. The particular benefit though is the fact that RNA will eventually get degraded while in the cell, thus any changes made are temporary and can be better fine tuned in the future. In this way gene editing can be treated more as a long term, but safer solution than the quick but more potentially CRISPR solution.
