What criteria will determine an ethical use of human genome editing?

Genome editing technology offers great potential to advance the science and medical fields. Basic research is helping scientists understand the mechanisms of diseases and other physiological processes, which could establish new therapeutic approaches.

The technology is entering clinical testing for somatic treatment of certain genetic diseases, and the approval of a new drug for human use is subjected to regulatory issues.

The possibility to edit germline cells to prevent heritable transmission of certain genetic traits is a real challenge to the regulatory agencies because it's something that was never done before and has no precedents. Additionally, ethical implications could limit advances in the area.

At the same time, genome editing technology is challenging the public and regulators to find solutions.

Thus, the criteria that will determine the ethical use of human genome editing will be the following:

  • Does it promote well-being? The application must promote the health and well-being of individuals such as treating or preventing diseases and it should be relevant.
  • Is it transparent? The technology should respect the principles of openness and sharing of information in a way that is accessible to all stakeholders.
  • Is it responsible? It should adhere to the highest standards of research according to international norms.
  • Is it fair? There must be equitable access to the benefits of resulting clinical applications of human genome editing.
  • Is it respectful? It should respect the dignity of all individuals acknowledgment of the centrality of personal choice, and respect for individual decisions
  • Due care: It means "Proceeding cautiously and incrementally, under appropriate supervision and in ways that allow for frequent reassessment in light of future advances and cultural opinions".
  • Does it promote transnational cooperation? It should support a commitment to collaborative approaches and respect different cultural contexts.

Congrats Anna! Your approach shows objectivity and balance!

These ethical questions should be discussed to the advancement of the biology, science and the whole mankind. Your aprouch is a good perspective to the questioning of the results of the science development! Congratulatons!
