What are the ethical issues surrounding gene and cell therapy?

Since gene therapy involves making changes to a person´s genome, it raises some ethical issues. For example, how to distinguish between what is right or wrong in gene therapy? How to decide which traits are normal and which ones constitute a disease or disability? Will it be available and accessible to everyone? Should people be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human traits such as height, intelligence, or athletic ability?

Currently, gene therapy research has focused on the treatment of genetic diseases. However, it can be targeted to egg and sperm cells, allowing the inserted gene to pass to future generations. This idea is controversial because the consequences are not fully understood.
