The System Microbiology and Antimicrobial Resistance (SMART) lab headed by Hein M. TUN focuses on the often-overlooked interplays between gut microbiota and vaccination.

They hope to be able to bolster vaccine efficacy and durability, while reducing side effects, with microbiota-based adjuvants to reduce the necessity of frequent booster doses and lessen the burden on public vaccination initiatives.

To that end, the researchers have been investigating long-term associations between vaccination and microbiome composition, narrowing down exact species and metabolites that contribute to immunogenicity.
