Assembling a figure often takes longer than the experiment that produced it. When a control image and a treated image have to sit side by side in the same panel, or a gel photo needs to be paired with its labelled sketch, most of an afternoon disappears into resizing and stitching two files instead of into the science.
For the simple two-image cases I now use ai image combiner. You drop in both pictures, choose side-by-side or overlay, nudge the split line, and export a single file. It runs entirely in the browser, so nothing has to be installed on a shared lab machine and the images stay in the tab until you download the result.
It is not a substitute for ImageJ or Illustrator when you need scale bars, channel merging or any kind of quantification. For a clean before-and-after panel it just removes an afternoon of fiddling.
