Every parent wants to give their child the best possible start. Yet two of the most significant factors shaping a child's growth, their vision and their developmental health, are often treated as completely separate concerns. At our Eye Hospital, these services work as one, because we see them as two sides of the same coin.
We are a dedicated paediatric facility that brings together expert eye care and comprehensive child development support under one roof. Our mission is straightforward: identify problems early, treat them with the right expertise, and guide every child toward their full potential.
Vision is not simply about reading letters on a chart. It is a complex neurological skill that underpins nearly everything a young child does, from recognising faces as a newborn to tracking words across a page in school. Research consistently shows that around one in four children has a vision problem that directly affects their ability to learn, yet most cases go undetected because children rarely complain about blurry vision. They simply assume the world looks the same for everyone.
"Children don't report blurry vision; they've never known anything different. A short attention span or a struggle with reading is often the only clue."
Our paediatric ophthalmology team provides comprehensive eye examinations from newborns through to teenagers. We manage a full range of conditions, including lazy eye (amblyopia), squint (strabismus), myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, congenital cataracts, and blocked tear ducts. Every assessment is designed around the child. Our rooms, equipment, and clinical approach are built for small, sometimes nervous patients.
Early detection changes outcomes dramatically. A child treated for amblyopia before the age of seven has a far higher chance of full visual recovery than one treated in adolescence. This is why we recommend a first comprehensive eye screening by age three or sooner if any concern arises.
Alongside our eye care services, we are home to a dedicated Child Development Centre staffed by developmental paediatricians, speech-language therapists, occupational therapists, and behavioural specialists. We support children experiencing delays in speech and language, difficulties with motor skills, sensory processing challenges, learning disorders such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and global developmental delay.
Early intervention is the most powerful tool available. The brain is at its most adaptable in the first few years of life, and targeted support during this window creates lasting change. Every child who comes to us receives a thorough, individualised assessment before any programme begins because no two children are the same, and no two care plans should be either.
What sets our integrated approach apart is the recognition that vision problems frequently masquerade as developmental concerns. A child struggling to focus visually may appear inattentive. Poor eye tracking can resemble a reading disorder. Weak binocular vision can present as poor coordination or social withdrawal. At the same time, children with neurological and developmental conditions, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism, have significantly higher rates of visual impairment than the general population.
This is why our teams work together rather than in parallel. A child referred for speech therapy receives an eye screening as standard. A child attending for squint correction is routinely reviewed against developmental milestones. This joint approach frequently uncovers needs that would otherwise go unaddressed for months, sometimes years.
When to seek an assessment
Squinting or rubbing eyes often
Speech delay or limited eye contact
Avoiding books or closed tasks
Headaches after visual tasks
Losing their place while reading
Clumsiness beyond the typical range
Your first visit begins with a detailed conversation about your child's birth history, early milestones, family eye health, and any concerns from home or school. From there, we build a personalised assessment plan and, following evaluation, provide a clear written report with a step-by-step management plan. We liaise directly with your child's school and referring doctor to ensure continuity of care every step of the way.
We know a hospital visit can feel daunting. Our centre is designed to feel calm and welcoming, with dedicated play spaces and clinical staff trained specifically to work with children. When a child feels safe, getting the right information becomes much easier — for them and for you.
