Planning a garage with an upstairs studio corner

Hi all, quick background: my partner edits videos from our dining table, and it’s not working with kids and noise. I don’t have room for a two-car build, but I found this two-story single-bay prefab — https://www.storageshedsandgarages.com/prefabricated-garages/single-car/2-story/ — and I’m thinking car below, small edit nook above. For anyone who’s installed one, how practical is the upper floor for daily use (insulation, outlets, lighting)? Do these come pre-wired, or does a local electrician handle it after assembly? Are there any noise or vibration issues from the garage below? How much footprint do the stairs take inside?

Thanks for starting this. I’m considering a similar setup for a hobby studio, and the staircase footprint comment is helpful. If you go ahead, I’d appreciate any notes on how long the finish work took and whether you needed extra ventilation upstairs. Sounds like a smart way to add usable space without a full addition.

Howdy! Those two-story single-car prefab units are designed to be finished out—framing is ready, and you (or a local pro) can handle electrical, insulation, drywall, and flooring after the shell is up. The stair runs are standard and don’t feel cramped; plan your layout so the landing doesn’t steal prime wall space. For noise, adding insulation in the floor between levels plus a solid door at the stair base makes a big difference. I’d get the company’s drawings first, then have your electrician review circuit needs and panel capacity so rough-ins happen right after assembly.
