How to properly prepare equipment for transportation?

The last time I helped move some equipment, I realized we completely underestimated how much preparation actually matters. We packed everything quickly, thinking thick blankets and a few straps would be enough, but a couple of tools ended up scratched and one small machine shifted in the truck. After that, I started reading about picking the right date and the best time of year to move, and found this guide — it made me think timing and preparation go hand in hand.

Now I’m wondering what else we might be missing. When you’re preparing equipment for transportation, do you usually disassemble parts, drain fluids, or secure cables separately? I’d like to avoid repeating the same mistakes next time.

Yeah, I’ve been there. It’s surprising how easy it is to overlook small details. What helped me was treating each piece of equipment differently instead of packing everything the same way. For example, with power tools I always remove detachable parts, wrap them separately, and put screws or bolts into labeled zip bags. For anything with moving parts, I secure them with tape so nothing shifts during transit. If there are liquids involved, draining them is definitely a good idea. And I always take a quick photo before disassembling anything — it saves time when putting it back together. Preparation takes a bit longer, but it really pays off.

Reading this reminds me how much moving is about planning rather than strength. Even when I moved simple office equipment, I noticed that organization made everything smoother. Labeling, keeping small parts together, and not rushing at the last minute makes a big difference. It’s funny how these small practical habits end up saving both time and money in the long run.
