A Great Relief: New Report Shows COVID-19 Vaccine Protects against B1.1.7 Variant

In September 2020, UK reported a SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern, named as B.1.1.7. Later, eight amino acid changes within spike were found in B.1.1.7, making it spread more efficiently and faster than other strains. Meanwhile, there are concerns around the effectiveness of current COVID-19 vaccines for this "super" variant.

Last Friday,  a Science report showed that the BioNTech-Pfizer mRNA vaccine remained effective against B.1.1.7 with only a slight decrease in neutralization that was more apparent in participants under 55 years of age, which means the B.1.1.7 lineage will not escape BNT162b2-mediated protection.
