Aβ 1-40 and Aβ 1-42 have been used to detect amyloid β-protein multimers in the cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer's disease patients. Aβ 1-40 shows both neurotrophic and neurotoxic effects in dependence on the neuronal age and the concentration of the β-protein
