Team Description
UCSC’s iGEM 2020 team intends to develop a biodegradable thermoplastic alternative to bed mulch films in use today. The agricultural industry is a large consumer of single-use plastics due to its dependence on plastic mulch films that are instrumental in providing weed suppression, prevention of fertilizer loss, and efficient fumigation. Our project starts with investigating plasticizers. Later steps will involve creating a co-culture that will produce and modify cellulose to form plastic.
